First call to parents after 24 years and getting a Birth Certificate

This video, extracted from the Dateline NBC program, is dated October 12, 2018. People often ask why I didn’t contact my family and friends for 24 years. On the surface that is a legitimate question. But the simple answer is: everyone reacts differently when faced with a traumatic, life changing event. After the accident I was in complete shock and for the next several years wanted nothing to do with anyone, especially the authorities. I wasn’t running or hiding—I was literally out of my mind over losing Dianne and that made me distance myself from the world.

In time, though, things started to make sense again as I slowly returned to civilization. There are many people who never return; I was fortunate enough to overcome the depression, mental anguish of grief, and trauma that haunted me for years.

So when I finally did talk to my parents and my sister, it was a time for celebration rather than melancholy. It was truly amazing to finally hear their voices, and have their unconditional support as I worked through the U.S. court systems to eventually return home to Canada.

When life throws you a curve, the best thing you can do is to explain it all (and hence why all the evidence on this website and the book), and move on.
