The accident details and how quickly it all happened

This video, extracted from the Dateline NBC program, is dated October 12, 2018. Preparing to land on the lake was a major ordeal that involved much planning, but once again Dateline cut all that out from my interview. In a nutshell, here’s what happened: After David Firth, my ground school instructor, assured us we could safely land on water, Dianne and I spent months discussing the details of our elopement, preparing, collecting supplies, saving money, etc.

When it finally came down to executing our plan, we randomly placed our clothes, disguises, and supplies into two garbage bags at the Penticton airport, changed into our bathing suits, and removed the back panel between the storage compartment and the tail-end of the fuselage so that the plane would sink faster. We had it all planned out and were quite excited to begin our new life together when the unthinkable happened.

Imagine how you would have felt, and what that would do to your mental state, if someone you were in love with and were going to spend the rest of your life with, suddenly drowned in front of you and there was nothing you could do to save her?

If you can image that, you still would not come close to what it felt like to lose Dianne at that moment!

And, therefore, it is disconcerting to hear people like Sheriff Dupont and Pat Walsh make up nonsense about how they would have done things differently, as if it was some sort of a casual event. The evidence was there for 24 years so all they had to do was look at the photos, read the RCMP and Flathead County reports, and base their conclusions on the indisputable facts staring them in the face. But they couldn’t even do that right. I don’t know who put these people in charge of the investigation, but based on what they concluded compared to what the evidence showed, they should have been fired, not promoted.
